Junior Firefighter Camp

Grades: 6 - 8

Dates & Times: June 17 - 21 (Week 4), 9 AM - 12 PM (waitlist only!)

Location: UAF Firehouse, UAF Campus

Cost: $195

Description: Explore the work that firefighters do, including emergency medical care, rescue, and firefighting. Activities may include practicing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and cardiac defibrillation, observing the use of powered rescue tools, and using firefighting equipment such as hand tools, fire hoses, and ladders. Campers will work alongside the firefighters performing station upkeep, housekeeping, and daily equipment checks.

Instructor: Forrest Kuiper

A little about your instructor: Forrest Kuiper is the fire chief of the University Fire Department. A product of UAF’s fire science program as well as other UAF programs, Kuiper has been working in the fire service since 1997, when he started working at UAF as a student firefighter. He has earned an associate degree in fire science, associate degree in hazardous materials, a baccalaureate degree in emergency management, and a master’s degree in public administration, all from the University of Alaska. He is also a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program. When he is not on duty, Kuiper enjoys spending his free time sharing his passion of being outdoors in Alaska hunting and fishing with his wife, Buffy, and son, Glacier.
