Description: Are you curious about mushrooms? Come learn all about the diversity, ecology, and human uses of Alaskan fungi. Campers will learn how to observe, collect and identify local mushroom species by going on mushroom walks on nearby trails, making spore prints, and looking in microscopes! We will be answering questions like “How do you tell mushroom species apart?”, “When is it safe to eat mushrooms?”, and “Why are fungi important?” through fun activities inside and out of the classroom.
Instructor: Anna Kindberg
A little about your instructor: Anna Kindberg is a graduate student in microbial ecology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, with a passion for all things fungi. Originally from Georgia, she developed an interest in the fungal kingdom as a teenager and pursued mycology throughout her undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia through research, coursework, and by leading mushroom-focused nature-walks for her peers. She moved to Fairbanks in the summer of 2025 and co-founded the Fairbanks Mycological Society, a volunteer-led community organization dedicated to public education and fungal-focused community events in the Tanana Valley of Alaska.
