Description: Get a taste of living “off the grid” from the comforts of the Troth Yeddha’ campus. This camp will introduce skills and concepts used in off-grid building construction and engineering. Students will design, construct, insulate, and electrify a model home outfitted with working solar panels and a wind turbine. We will also visit energy labs on campus and nearby, go on walks to look at building features students might want to use in their model homes, and hear from professionals working and conducting research across Alaska. This is a full-day program. Please come prepared with a small snack, a full lunch, and the outdoor gear needed for daily campus walks.
Instructor: Tyler Katzmar
A little about your instructor: Tyler lives in Anchorage on the traditional and unceded lands of the Dena’ina Athabaskan. Tyler moved to Alaska in 2009 to attend college at Alaska Pacific University. While studying marine biology, Tyler fell in love with the Alaska backcountry and developed the camping, skiing, hiking and sea kayaking skills needed to travel comfortably outside. When not educating Alaskan’s about energy with the Renewable Energy Alaska Project, Tyler enjoys fishing, hunting, and harvesting berries and medicinal plants. During the winter, Tyler preserves his summer harvest through canning, infusing, smoking, and fermenting.
