Description: Students will learn the basics of reading music, including notes, clefs, and rhythms, while also developing listening skills and learning how to describe what they hear using sound-inspired language. Participants will begin singing together as a group using solfege. Each day, students will draw and color while listening to music, exploring creative ways to express how the music makes them feel. The class will include group discussions and collaborative activities, as well as time for individual creative work.
Instructor: Sarah McConnell
A little about your instructor: Sarah McConnell teaches music theory and ear training at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Sarah earned her PhD in music theory at the University of North Texas in 2018. She has sung with various choral ensembles, performed oboe since the age of 11 and played piano since the age of 5. She worked at a daycare for 2 years in Texas before moving to Alaska to teach at UAF. She loves teaching music and working with kids.
Instructor: Alexia Devine
A little about your instructor: Alexia Devine is a 3rd year Music Education Major at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Her main instrument is voice and she takes lessons from Dr. Jaunelle Celaire. Alexia has partaken in multiple musicals and operas, with her most recent role as an ancestor in FLOT and FSAF’s production of The Addams’ Family. She is excited to continue her teaching journey and work with you this summer.
